For expansion of online courses in Hellenic Studies at Simon Fraser University (HS-SFU) and to build on the already established partnership with China. A print and online Greek-Chinese-Greek lexicon will be developed, and the University plans to offer an online minor or major in Hellenic Studies.
HS-SFU will also cultivate a relationship with several Chinese universities to encourage Chinese graduate students to specialize in Hellenic Studies.
The online courses are designed for both English and Chinese speakers and will cater specifically to SFU students of Chinese background and to students at the universities in China with which SFU is partnering for this project. In addition, Chinese courses are being developed for Greek speakers, as there is substantial interest in the Chinese language among students of Hellenic origin. A Greek-to-Chinese/Chinese-to-Greek voice-activated electronic dictionary has also been developed.
The University hopes that by training Chinese students to study Greek language and by acknowledging China´s strong interest in Internet education through its online courses, it will help develop a constituency in China for Hellenic Studies programs. SFU has over twenty years of experience working with universities in China on student exchanges and field schools.
